2008 or 2025 Civics Test? Which one is for my Citizenship Interview?

If you’re applying for U.S. citizenship, you’ve probably heard there are two versions of the civics test — and you’re not alone if you’re confused about which one to study. USCIS recently announced updates to the naturalization test, and the rules depend on when you filed your Form N-400.
(You can also download the attached PDF comparison chart that shows the key differences between the 2008 and 2025 civics tests.)
1. Two Versions of the Civics Test
USCIS currently has two civics tests in use:
2008 Version — The long-standing version with 100 questions.
2025 Version — The new test, effective October 20, 2025, with 128 updated questions and some changes to the interview format.
2. Which Civics Test Applies to You?
Here’s the rule:
If you filed your Form N-400 before October 20, 2025, you will take the 2008 civics test — even if your interview happens after that date.
If you file your Form N-400 on or after October 20, 2025, you will take the 2025 civics test.
In short: Your filing date — not your interview date — decides your test version.

I spent some time to go over all the questions in both versions and created this PDF to show the differences.
