If you’re applying for U.S. citizenship, there’s an important update you need to hear about. USCIS has just announced changes to the naturalization test—and yes, this could affect you.
What’s Changing?
USCIS is reintroducing the 2020 version of the civics test, now renamed the 2025 Naturalization Civics Test.
The English language portion of the test (reading, writing, speaking, and understanding) will not change for now. However, the official announcement was titled:
“USCIS Unveils First Changes to Naturalization Test in Multi-Step Overhaul of American Citizenship Standards.”
That means more changes could be coming in the future—and it wouldn’t be surprising if the English test is updated as well.
Key Details About the 2025 Civics Test
Here’s what you can expect with the new format:
The civics question bank will increase from 100 to 128 questions.
Applicants will be asked up to 20 questions.
You’ll need to answer 12 correctly to pass.
Once you reach 12 correct answers, the officer will stop asking questions.
Who Takes Which Test?
Not everyone will be tested under the new format. Here’s the breakdown:
Applied before the notice is published in the Federal Register → You’ll take the 2008 test.
Applied within 30 days after publication → You’ll still take the 2008 test.
Applied 30 days or more after publication → You’ll take the 2025 test.
What This Means for You
If you’ve already applied, keep studying using the resources you’ve been using. The 2008 version is still your test.
If you’re planning to apply later, prepare for the new 2025 version.
